Overwatch

Overwatch is a multiplayer first-person shooter game released in 2016.

The game Overwatch divides players into two teams of six, with each team choosing a character from a list of various “heroes” that are available. Each hero has a distinct playing style, and their duties are broken down into four main categories: Offense, Defense, Tank, and Support.

Overwatch is primarily an online multiplayer game, but it also features a single-player mode against computer-controlled opponents called “Practice Range.”

The game features several modes, which include Quick Play (players can use their hero), Competitive Play (players must choose heroes that fit the team’s composition), and Arcade Mode (a more casual experience).

Players gain experience points in these modes, which allows them to level up and acquire new cosmetic items such as skins or voice lines.

Overwatch Game Modes

Let’s look at 7 game modes available in Overwatch. Check it out!

AssaultThe game mode “Assault” features two teams capturing points while trying to stop the other team from taking them. When one of the points is finally captured, time will increase on the clock, and both teams can start spawning closer.
ControlControl is an elimination-based game mode. There are three rounds; the first team to win two rounds wins the game.
Whichever team reaches 100% first also wins that round. When one team reaches 99%, overtime will start while the game point is still being debated.
EscortIn the game mode “Escort,” the assaulting team must escort a payload to its objective, and the opposing team must prevent them from getting there.

Each map has 2-3 checkpoints between the starting spot and the finish line. When you reach a checkpoint, your timer will be extended, and both teams will be moved back to the spawning points.
HybridThis game mode starts with an Assault Capture Point and then proceeds with the Escort objective.
Capture the FlagCapture the flag is a game mode where one flag is in your base, and the other team is in their base.

The objective is to take their flag or defend your own. When the playtime is up, the team with the most points or who reaches three first wins the match.
DeathmatchThe Deathmatch game mode is a competitive mode in which players try to eliminate the other players in 10 minutes, and the player who reaches 20 points first wins.
EliminationElimination mode is played in a first-to-three format with one life per player against another group of the same size in 1v1 or 3v3, or 6v6 teams.

The team that destroys all opposing team members will then win that round. Heroes played during a winning match cannot be used again.

Esports

Overwatch was not designed to have a massive presence in the esports section. The game’s publisher had shown no interest in marketing the game as an esports phenomenon; in fact, the primary focus of the developers was to ‘build a great competitive game’ for the users.

After the game’s release, the developer added some new features focused on establishing Overwatch as the next big esports title.

The impact was instantaneous, with the online community getting behind it.

The first tournament was organized in 2016, just a few months after the game’s launch. The first international tournament (organized by E.S.L.) was held in the same year.

Even the developer and publisher of the game got into the action and organized an Overwatch World Cup, which has had four editions till now.

Several regional tournaments for Overwatch are still organized, including an Overwatch League, with the first season having a prize pool of $3.5 million.
